Review: Coffee around campus

What is considered a student’s best friend?

According to some, the answer might be coffee—the drink that carries you through your years of study and follows you from lecture halls to late-night exam cramming. On campus there are several cafés, and Lösnummer has visited them to find out where the best coffee can be found. The investigation was based on two criteria: taste and price. The result was a mix of surprises, minor disappointments, and plenty of caffeine kicks.

Cafés visited (prices from cheapest to most expensive)

  1. Kåren: 7 SEK (10 SEK with a take-away cup)

  2. Nova: 15 SEK

  3. The Library: 15 SEK

  4. Långhuset (Infocenter): 17 SEK

  5. Forum Restaurant: 19 SEK

  6. Eat (Teknikhuset): 19 SEK

  7. Musikhögskolan: 19 SEK

REVIEW

1. Kåren

Looking for a cheap cup of coffee or a quick caffeine boost on your way to a lecture? Then this coffee might be for you. For just 7 SEK, you get a cup that is well worth the price. The coffee is warm, moderately strong, and tastes freshly brewed. A takeaway cup costs 10 SEK, but we think the extra two kronor are definitely worth it.

Rating: 7/10

Price: 7 SEK (10 SEK for takeaway)

Milk options: Regular milk and oat drink

2. Café Nova

Café Nova differs from the other cafés on campus since it only offers a coffee machine. The options available are brewed coffee, cappuccino, and latte, and no milk alternatives are provided—instead, powdered milk is used.

It’s convenient and simple for those who want something quick, but for people who are lactose intolerant this is not ideal since there are no lactose-free options. The coffee therefore does not suit those with allergies or preferences other than regular milk.

Overall, we think the coffee works fine, and 15 SEK is an acceptable price. However, the rating drops slightly because the cups are small, there are no milk alternatives, and the coffee leaves us with the feeling that something is missing.

Rating: 6/10

Price: 15 SEK

Milk options: None provided separately; milk powder in the machine

3. The Library – Café Lyktan

This coffee was a pleasant surprise. The flavor was nutty, strong, and slightly luxurious. There are also several milk alternatives available, allowing you to decide yourself how strong you want your coffee. Perfect if you are studying in the library—and for just 15 SEK, this tasted like really good coffee.

Rating: 8/10

Price: 15 SEK

Milk options: Regular, lactose-free, oat drink, and soy drink

4. Långhuset (Infocenter) – Café Almby

Långhuset and the Infocenter are places many students visit, so we had high hopes for the coffee. Unfortunately, we were a bit disappointed. The coffee didn’t quite live up to expectations. It was rather weak and had a dull flavor that felt thin and slightly bitter. For 17 SEK, it didn’t feel entirely worth the price.

Rating: 5/10

Price: 17 SEK

Milk options: Regular, lactose-free, and oat drink

5. Forum Restaurant

The coffee is solid and does the job, but it doesn’t stand out from the crowd. The taste is good, but it leaves an aftertaste that reminds you of something other than just the typical coffee flavor.

Because of that, 19 SEK feels a bit expensive since the coffee lacks that extra something. If you’re already in the Forum building it works fine, but it’s not worth going out of your way for.

Rating: 7/10

Price: 19 SEK

Milk options: Regular, lactose-free, and oat drink

6. Eat (Teknikhuset)

Like Forum Restaurant, coffee at Eat costs 19 SEK. Here too the coffee felt slightly overpriced, and we expected more considering the price tag. Instead, we were somewhat disappointed as the coffee was a bit weak and lacked character. Due to both the price and taste, the rating unfortunately drops slightly, and you would probably choose another place if you value both price and flavor.

Rating: 6/10

Price: 19 SEK

Milk options: Regular and oat drink

7. Café Prego (Musikhögskolan)

The coffee costs 19 SEK per cup, but what sets it apart from others in the same price range is that you can tell it is made from high-quality beans, giving it a real café feel.

Even though the School of Music is located further up on campus, we think the walk is worth it. While you’re there, you can also study—so it’s two birds with one stone. A really good cup of coffee increases the chances of a productive study session.

Rating: 8/10

Price: 19 SEK

Milk options: Regular, lactose-free, and oat drink

RESULTS

After this review, there are a few conclusions for anyone looking for a really good cup of coffee.

Choose Örebro Student Union Building if you want good coffee at a great price.

Choose Café Lyktan in the library if you want tasty coffee that feels a bit more luxurious.
